Dez sat in a corner of the Library on a window seat she'd adorned with a fleece blanket her mother had given her. New York is cold, Her mother had said in the card she'd tucked in the bowed ribbon around the blanket. I'm glad to hear you're doing well in your classes. And even though she was too old for stuffed animals, at least in the eyes of most people, she still brought her stuffed lion Patchy, its legs made with patches of different fabrics like a patchwork quilt.
And so, now, leaning against the side of the window seat with her knees curled up under the blanket and Patchy propped against her chest, supporting a large hardcover edition of Lord of the Rings in her lap. On the sill of the window sat her mp3 player, the ear-buds tucked firmly in her ears and playing music softly.
Still, in the quiet of the library with her mp3 player set to so soft hardly any sound could be heard without wearing them, Dez was disturbing the peace. At least she wasn't doing it loudly.
It wasn't that the book in her hands was boring, far from it. It was simply that the tune sprouting from her mp3 player was none other than "The Ring Goes South", that theme from Lord of the Rings where the whole posse makes that epic climb between those two rocks and look, well, epic. And so, as the epic imagery came to mind, she looked up from her book and hummed along with the tune, a smile on her face.
It was done faster than she would've liked, but the smile remained on her face as she giggled to herself, fond memories of singing that theme with her kooky high school friends as they made their way to wherever they were going.
Eager to listen to the theme once more, she pushed the back button on her mp3 player and the slow build up to the epicosity restarted.
